Scholarship Fund

The AGASC will set aside $2500.00 each year for scholarships. We will provide up to five scholarships per year for up to 50% of the cost of a workshop, but no more than $500.00. Only one scholarship will be awarded per person per calendar year. We are proposing that the Annual Exhibition Auction will be used to replenish the scholarship fund balance each year. Any year that the auction does not make enough to replenish the scholarship fund, it will be supplemented by the AGASC Education Fund or the General Fund if the Education Fund cannot meet the requirement. The awards will always be given to the workshop provider.

Purpose of Scholarships

Scholarships are to be for Southern California workshops, classes, and online classes for students who apply for assistance to participate, preferably provided and promoted by the AGASC. Board Members, Committee Chairpersons, Committee Members, and their family members will not be eligible to participate in receiving a scholarship.

Scholarship Committee

We have created a committee of three people to award the scholarships, including our Education Chair, and two members who are not on the Board. The committee will evaluate the applications and who will be selected to be a recipient. We must not exercise “favorites” in the selection of recipients, based on personal relationships or knowledge of the person. Once the committee has decided on the recipients, they will forward the list, their applications, and the amount of scholarship awarded to the board. The Board will approve or deny the individual scholarships.

Eligible Applicants

Eligible applicants must be residents of Southern California (San Diego, Imperial, Orange, Riverside, Los Angeles, Ventura, and San Bernardino Counties). Applicants are not required to be members of AGASC, but we would encourage them to join our association. The IRS rules are designed to make sure that scholarship programs benefit a broad charitable class of beneficiaries and that the program is non-discriminatory.

Participant Applications

Applications for the scholarship will include the applicant’s experience with the glass arts, their achievements within the glass arts, their community involvement, participation in glass activities, awards, and a short essay on why they should receive the scholarship (see attached sheets). If the participant has only limited experience with glass art they should say so, because we want to make workshops and classes available for the novice as well as the experienced. Applications will be available online (on our website). If an application is received for a workshop of which we are not aware, it is up to the committee to research the workshop for validity. For promotions, we may use brochures, newsletters, and emails to glass program administrators.

Promotion of Workshops

We would prefer to see the workshops promoted 6-8 weeks prior to the date of the workshop to allow time for applicants to get their applications in for processing. It will be best to approve applications at least 3 weeks before the workshop or class begins, such that no applications will be reviewed if received less than 3 weeks prior to the workshop or class. Should the recipient be unable to satisfy their portion of the cost of the workshop, the scholarship award will then be revoked and offered in succession to the list of alternates, if any, until filled.
